From Affections

by Daniel Russo

How can I let you know that there is always time?
That you just have to find it and give it to yourself
That nobody makes the rules except life
That life without certain rules, loses its form
That form is not lost by opening up
That opening up is not loving indiscriminately
That it's not forbidden to love
That you can hate, too
That love and hate are affections
That aggression just because, hurts a lot
That wounds heal
That doors should not be closed
That the greatest door is affection
That affections are not defined
That defining oneself is not rowing against the flow
That a stronger stroke does not draw more
That looking for balance is not being mild
That denying your word is opening distances
That finding each other is very beautiful
That sex is a part of the beauty of life
That life begins with sex
That the why of the children, has a because
That wanting to know about someone is not plain curiosity
That wanting to know everything about everyone, is malicious curiosity
That it's never excessive to say thank you
That self determination is not doing things by yourself
That nobody wants to be alone
That in order to be not alone, you have to give
That in order to give, you must have received before
That in order to receive, you must know how to ask
That knowing how to ask is not giving oneself away
That giving yourself away is, in the end, not loving yourself
That in order to be loved we must show what we are
That for someone to be, you must help him
That helping is being able to support and encourage
That helping is not flattering
That flattering is as bad as turning to look the other way
That things face to face are more honest
That nobody is honest just because he doesn't steal
That he who steals is not a thief for pleasure
That when there is no pleasure in things, you are not living
That in order to feel life, you must not forget that there is death
That you can be dead while living
That you feel with your body and with your mind
That with your ears you listen
That it's hard to be sensitive and not get hurt
That hurting is not bleeding to death
That in order not to be hurt, we raise walls
That he who plants walls, does not harvest anything
That almost all of us are wall makers
That it would be better to build bridges
That on them you can get to the other shore and also return
That returning does not mean going back
That going backwards can also mean going forward
That not because you walked a long way, you'll dawn closer to the sun
